There are lots of wheels that look good, if not perfect, on these
cars. Some are even designed with our cars in mind. So why try
to find a wheel that's coming from an entirely different place on
the design spectrum and splice it in? The Volks would look much
better on a G35 or Maxima than your car.
I find wheels look best when they're matched carefully to shape,
size, and proportions of the car, otherwise it's just 'look i have a
set of wheels' and it doesn't look nearly as tight. The Volks, to my
eye, just ain't right on a car as subtle as an A4.

I would tend to agree with you, but in this instance function is a consideration as well, no one buys 500 dollar volks just for the looks of it.
