I kept this vehicle until it had 68K miles, then I traded it in. Only issue was a water pump at 45K miles... luckily for me, it was still under warranty. Two of my friends have 98 A4's (2.8 models) and they've both had control arm problems and have paid big $$ to have them fixed/replaced (happened to both vehicles at about 70K miles). Otherwise, no major issues...

I had a B6 can actually prefer my B5 so I went back. This is currently my 4th A4 and 12 Audi, so I know a thing or two. The car has lots of pluses, here are the negatives:
Control arm failures- a decent mechanic and buying a whole kit at once makes it a mere nusiance. DIY makes it a cheap fix.
Timing Belt- 75k to 90k, a must-do. Job costs $850, not a DIY. A broken belt can do $3500 in damage.
No sludge/turbo issues like the 1.8t has.
Overall the car's abilities outweigh the maintenance and repairs. If you are a total wussy whiner and go to the dealer, it's expensive and unfullfilling. If you are a cool guy, patient, smart and DIY there is no better car on the road.
