Default What does it mean to ride the clutch, and why is it bad?

I hear the term all the time, and watching Seinfeld has me believe it's bad for the car (ref: Episode Obessive Mechanic). So, what is riding the clutch?

How about "glazing the clutch"? What does that mean?

Default I don't know the chemical/physical cause, but as I understand it, glazing the clutch results from...

the surface of the clutch overheating, thanks to a particularly vicious abuse (usually a botched launch). It essentially 'glazes' the surface of the clutch such that it cannot fully engage and it slips for a period until it can cool down, at which point the surface regains most of it's friction capability. If anyone can elaborate/correct here, feel free.

Default That's more or less it. I did that to my clutch once when I was...m..

in about 6 miles of bumper to bumper traffic due to an accident. My clutch did not work well for the rest of the trip home (and my left knee was killing me for two days). The clutch was better the following day, but I've got to believe I took 5k miles off its life due to that day.

Default Here

I actually always double clutch when downshifting. I just can't for the life of me downshift w/o double clutching and keep it smooth.

The only thing that works for me is double clutching.

Yeah, I know, I should really learn not to rely on it entirely.<ul><li><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_clutch">Double clutching</a></li></ul>

Default Riding clutch:not letting the pedal out all the way.

bad because your clutch disk is wearing out as it slips around until you let the pedal out all the way
