I just loaded the newest Audi AESIS (Audi Electronic Service Information System) disc (DVD 03-2) that came FEDEX yesterday and it says to use G 052 911 A1 75W90 synthetic gear oil for all 5 and 6 speed manual transmissions.

If what "to use" = what was put in there in the factory, then I guess it's multi.

http://tech.bentleypublishers.com/thread.jspa?forumID=33&threadID=2144&messa geID=5670</a

and I don't think changing the tranny fluid is going to fix that, although some people did report slight improvement.
If you read the thread I linked, it seems that this spec does not specifically state whether the oil is GL-4 or GL-5. As you wrote, the assumption that it should not be a GL-5 is based on the fact that Audi trannies contain brass parts which may be harmed by GL-5. So it's GL-4 by method of elimination.
AFAIK, there are numerous grades that are classified as GL-4, kinda like there are numerous engine oil grades that are classified as SL. For example, Redline sells MTL which is a 70w-80 as well as MT-90 which is a 75w-90. Both are GL-4 gear oils.

I used Red-Line MTL in my '00 1.8t Beetle MT5 and it seemed to improve the overall feel of the gears. But 2nd can still be a pain. Some say it is due to the Short Shifter. But I had the problem before that and as well as in my '85 Gti.

When my shifter was stock, the 2nd gear action wasn't all that great. Once I put in a short shift kit, it became a little more notchy due to the nature of the short shifter and overall reduced throw.

and that it does not need to be changed unless work is performed on it. But I have used Red-Line MTL in the past with good results.
