Default Word is GL-4 90W. GL-5 is NOT compatable with brass syncro rings due to EP additives. Call Blau

their multi-weight GL-5 might be fine from what their web page says. LLubro-Moly

http://www.audiquattroparts.com/fluids.htm</a

Is that multi or single? A change to multi would be good if it came with single.

I just loaded the newest Audi AESIS (Audi Electronic Service Information System) disc (DVD 03-2) that came FEDEX yesterday and it says to use G 052 911 A1 75W90 synthetic gear oil for all 5 and 6 speed manual transmissions.

If what "to use" = what was put in there in the factory, then I guess it's multi.

http://tech.bentleypublishers.com/thread.jspa?forumID=33&threadID=2144&messa geID=5670</a

Default So it's multi-weight, but 2nd gear's a little stiff when cold.That spec...does it actually say GL-4?

It does say the weight range, but I thought GL-4 was strait 90w.

Default yeah, the 2nd gear action sucks on all Audis I've driven...

and I don't think changing the tranny fluid is going to fix that, although some people did report slight improvement.

If you read the thread I linked, it seems that this spec does not specifically state whether the oil is GL-4 or GL-5. As you wrote, the assumption that it should not be a GL-5 is based on the fact that Audi trannies contain brass parts which may be harmed by GL-5. So it's GL-4 by method of elimination.

AFAIK, there are numerous grades that are classified as GL-4, kinda like there are numerous engine oil grades that are classified as SL. For example, Redline sells MTL which is a 70w-80 as well as MT-90 which is a 75w-90. Both are GL-4 gear oils.

Default Same with my past VW's....

I used Red-Line MTL in my '00 1.8t Beetle MT5 and it seemed to improve the overall feel of the gears. But 2nd can still be a pain. Some say it is due to the Short Shifter. But I had the problem before that and as well as in my '85 Gti.

When my shifter was stock, the 2nd gear action wasn't all that great. Once I put in a short shift kit, it became a little more notchy due to the nature of the short shifter and overall reduced throw.

Default I was informed by dealer tech that Audi uses synthetic gear oil...

and that it does not need to be changed unless work is performed on it. But I have used Red-Line MTL in the past with good results.

These are what choices were available for the A4 B6 MT5/6;

Red-Line MT-90
Lubro Moly Synthetic Gear Oil 75W-90
AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic 75W90 Gear Lube (waiting for confirmation)
