just trying for the first time... searching, people seem to like it.
the 0w-40 wasn't up to my shop's standards... they turned me on to the 5w-40.

have used dino or bulk whatever in your case. That is what happened here, dealer oil...

Seller might have lied to you, who knows. That's why it takes a lot of rationality to understand all the "ifs" and "maybes" that occur. Blocked PCV or stuck thermostat is most often der sludge macher, not the miles driven.
To address your query about wear control. No, wear control is almost a non-issue in I-C-E. New oil formulas help, but improved metalurgy and materials science addressed most wear issues decades ago.
Now, to understand your case, you have a used V6 Passat w/ oil analysis saying high metals in general. Fresh oil might disslove some extra wear metals deposited in old sludge, thart's one answer. Wear actually does not usually ramp up over oil service, it goes down...older oil wears the engine more slowly. My reference is the 3MP Study. Ok, so if the dealer used Syntec 5w-40 w/high magnesium that is the exception that proves the rule. Magnesium additives can become abrasive when oxydized into the mineral Periclase (my theory). Dino oil also produces lower wear rates than synthetics. If you doubt these claims, come over to bobistheoilguy.com forums and ask about.
So, we could go on and on, but on one hand the Euro specs are based on 30k km intervals (18k) and we have 15k oils market in America (Castrol Edge and Mobil 1 EP)....on the other hand we have your experience with that one vehicle that has some unknowns in it's history. My opinion is that dino oils can go 6000 miles easily and 10k for synths is no probs either in Audi V6.
So, going forward...I'm surprised you know about used oil analysis but don't know about German Syntec??? I'll cut it short and mention auto-rx for some engine cleaning. It's a great product.
