What is the optimun load capacity for a car jack? Will a 1 1/2 ton do the trick? Or...

6,000 and 12,000 lbs floor jacks? Damn...
the B6 is a pig, but a 1 1/2 ton (i.e. 3,000 lbs) jack is plenty adequate for lifting at most 1/2 the weight of a ~3700 lb car.
I would agree that if you also own or plan to get an SUV, getting a higher rated jack would be smart.

the bigger capacity jacks will be easier to pump to raise the car. >
I have a fairly cheap aluminum 1 1/2 ton jack and I have to pump really hard to get it to raise the car (one corner).
It seems to me that it's straining, which isn't confidence inspiring.
I've used bigger jacks, like a 3 ton and it felt as if it picked up the car much easier.
Most of the higher capacity jacks also lift higher which is nice.
Just make sure you get one that is low enought to put under your car, lowered cars can make it tough to get under sometimes.

I used a 2 and 3 ton before. The 3 ton made it seem much safer than the 2 ton one
and it was easier to pump up or I had a good breakfast that day
You should also get a set of ramps. Those help a lot.
