What is the real purpose of the "check" button?

Excluding the speed warning, what is its purpose? Isn't the car supposed to automatically notify you of any problems? If so, why is the button there? It cycles through a bunch of diagnostic tests and then says OK. Shouldn't you be able to assume everything's OK if the car doesn't tell you otherwise?
I'm inclined to think it's nothing more than a sequence of images programmed by Audi's programmers. Here's why. The other day, I was low on both gas and washer fluid. All day, I was getting this annoying cycle of fuel low/washer fluid low indicators. At a stoplight, I pushed the check button, and it went through it's normal check procedure (which includes both gas and washer fluid). At the end, it gave me a big OK. What's up with that? At the very least, I should have not received the OK message.
I'm definitely not complaining about the on-board computer. I think it's fantastic; in fact, I've yet to see another car that can even come close to the abilities of the Audi's self-diagnostic system. However, I think it's stupid that they wasted time on the check button if it doesn't do anything. And it's not that it should do something. It just shouldn't be there.

pressing it brings up the clock, odometer, etc...
in addition, when the car is on, the cycle it goes through I *believe* checks the actual check system, not the systems it checks... (that was a great sentence).

it checks the systems and their warning mechanisms not used to notify you of a low washer fluid or low gas.
For example.. if you had a low fluid or gas and the car didnt warn you.. you would hit the button and it would not say OK.
