Default What synthetic oil for A4 3.0?

I am just at 10k and am going to do the oil change. Unlike many othe audi owners, I actually like to work on my car.

Anyway, I think the manual said to use 0w40, but I am not sure and can't run out to my car now to double check.

What oil did you guys use? I'm pretty much going to stick to Mobil1, so I just need the viscosity and weight.

Default oil weights vary depending on where you live(weather) and what you do with the car...

I live in socal and am running 20-50 amsoil on my b5 1.8tq, but I autox the car and get the oil temps up pretty quick.

Default If it is 0W-40 for the 3.0l, then I would highly recommend Motul Ester E-Tech 0W-40

Motul Ester E-Tech 0W-40

The ester based oil has amazing properties and is completely spec'd/approved. More expensive then M1, but worth it IMO. Go 8-10K miles with OCI easily.

I know places in SoCal where you can pick it up. If not here, then contact Motul USA for the closest distributor;

Default I took your advice and got an e-mail reply from Herve the same day.

He gave the the name of a shop here in Detroit that is expecting a shipment in the next week or so.

I'm going to pick some up (if they don't run out) and save it for my next change, probably around May.

Does synth oil have a shelf life? I.e., should/can I buy enough for more than one 10k period?

Default 2 year shelf life per Motul Website FAQ.

I'd just get enough for next change.

Default Agreed. That's the beauty of 8-10K OCI's; you just need enough to fill and top off if necessary.

Then buy some before your next OC. No need to stock up (unless you have multiple cars or you insist on changing it every 3-5K miles).
People are so concerned with having it OTC at local stores and base their decision on that. I have never been in a situation where I did not have, or could not get, an oil I was using (like Red Line).

Default That's great. I hope you like it. A little more money, but worth it IMHO.

Just get enough to fill and have some left over in case you need to top off. If you are concerned with not being able to get it later on, then buy enough for next time. But with 8-10K mile OCI's, you don't need to. Depends on driving obviously, engine condition and weather/climate. But you should have no problem doing the service maintenance OCI schedule. Make sure to do a UOA with Blackstone Labs if you can. Maybe do a sample test at 5K miles to see how it is doing. I'll be testing my 300 V 5W-40 during its use (taking samples every so often to see how it is performing).

Default Thanks for the Blackstone link. I've never done an oil analysis, but

I'm interested in doing so, since I want this car to last me for quite some time, and I want to take care of it so it takes care of me.

Default It's pretty painless.....

Just go to the website and click on the "Order Free Test Kit". They'll send everything you need. If you want to test the oil you are going to change out and do not receieve the kit in time, just take a sample of the oil and keep it in a clean glass or plastic container. You only need 4oz. Be sure to take a sample during the drain - not at the beginning or end. It would be wise to have that test, so you can see how the next one compares with the Motul oil. They'll send you extra test kits after you have them do the first UOA.
