What type of oil does the dealer put in a 1.8T?
I'm a service advisor for MB and we use Mobil 1 0w40 in all of our cars. Thats what I use in my 02 passat glx. I was wondering if my dealer is supposed to use synthetic in my 1.8T or if they are going to use some cheap bulk oil. Does Audi recommend a particular type of oil? is it ok if I use the 0w40 in my car?
sorry for the noob question, but this is my first Audi!

from the forum FAQ (see sig for link)
What oil should I use? (1/21/04)
This is (and will probably always be) a forever debated topic. The OFRM recommends (in order of preference) using oil with a viscosity grade of SAE 0W-30, or SAE 5W-30/5W-40, or SAE 10W-30/10W-40. In addition, oil that meets ACEA A3 and VW 502.00 quality ratings is also recommended by the OFRM.
The current forum choices (in alphabetic order) are:
Castrol Syntec 5W-30 (must check bottle; if Made in Germany, good; if Made in USA, bad)
Kendall GT-1 Full Synthetic 5W-40
Mobil 1 0W-40 (meets ACEA A3 and VW 502.00, where their 5W-30 does not)

Welcome. Some places use Castrol RX 15w-40 if you're lucky. Most use local dist bulk SL.
Wondering, on the MB side, if you guys are aware of the German-made Syntec 0w-30 that meets MB 229.3 and VW 503.01. It is actually Castrol SLX, a widely used oil in Europe. Factory-fill in 1.8ts. AutoZones sell it and it's a step-up from M1 0w-40. M1 SUV 5w-40 is repackaged Delvac-1, now it is distributed next to M1. Both these oils are more shear-stable than 0w-40 which shears into a mid 30 weight quickly. Audi's FSI goes up to 60,000 miles on it with monitoring.

Oil Preference
If I remember reading the bulletin corretly there was a VIN split in 04. I don't have the #'s in front of me, but Audi is using synthetic for the scheduled services. More then likely it is Castrol 5w/30.
