What is VW's strategy regarding Audi?
Just curious, what does VW plan to do with Audi? I see that VW is putting lipstick on the Passat and raising its price, and is introducing the D1 and the W12 supercar.
It seems like VW wants to upgrade its own brand, instead of using Audi to introduce these new upscale cars.
Given that BMW is the darling of the industry, and that BMW got where it is by making a sporting vehicle, I don't understand VW's strategy of luxurizing their own brand, rather than taking a fairly sporting brand they already have (Audi), and offering it the new cars. Does anyone know what's going on?

yea, it makes no sense, D1 will compete with a8 or a6 ... kinda dumb IMO
it should be the way it is (even passat vs. a4)
VW should be under audi ... ie, every single VW is cheaper than the cheapest audi .. .it would make more sense, but they seem to know what they are doing ... so i wont complain ...

The Corporate roadmap is for VW to go after Mercedes, Audi after BMW.
But Audi just picked up some of the corporate's plants to come under their umbrella....could this be VW positioning Audi for a sale...could be??
VW sells tons of cars compared to their Audi line...so you know where the interest lies!

I don't think Piech knows.
I read somewhere he was currently unhappy with Audi. He said the product line was too conservative. And I also read somewhere he attended a design review for the next A6 and was diappointed. He scrapped the German design team, and transferred the job over to Audi's design team in Spain.

An article in my Sunday paper states that the top end VW's will compete with the A8!
I think Audi is really being set up for sale....you can mark that date today...11-18-2001!!!! Ever wonder why the A4 looks like a Passat and uses many components? Blend the product lines and then start dumping models!!
Those rumors that Cadillac is looking my just be true!
I'm buying the 2002 A4 shortly but next go around is probably going to be a Bimmer if Audi looks like its headed south.....

Unfortunately, VW doesn't need Audi (like GM needs Saab)
VW is very successful, many Audi owners (espec. Europeans) would buy VW's anyway even if Audi were
discontinued...a bad sign for Audi.
GM has decided to pour millions into Saab, with many new models in the next 5 years, including AWD.
GM has lost market share, and finally pumping cash
into their premium brand will probably pay off big time.
Why does VW really need to pump money into Audi?
To please the few enthusiasts of quattro clubs and
Audiworld? They're doing great.
