Default What will steel brake lines do for performance?

I see people doing this mod, but I'm not sure if it is a cosmetic reason, or whether it makes a difference to brake feel, or whether it actually helps braking. Why do people do it?

I know someone else mentioned that you're better off running Motil 600 brake fluid instead of doing the steel brake lines...so I'm still trying to understand why people do it.

Much firmer brake pedal & better "feel".
I have not done this to my A4 yet but on my RX-7 it made a big, big difference.
I highly recommend it.

Stainless lines give you better and more consistent pedal feel, since they don't expand like rubber.

Default Motul brake fluid is pointless on the street, really

It's meant for the high temps your brakes see on the racetrack. Like everyone else said, steel lines will help with brake pedal feel.

Default good brake fluid, pads, better tires = considierable stopping distance gains.

SS lines are not necessary for street use.

Default Does porsche go with SS lines? 911 seems to have a very defined feeling when brakes engage

Sounds like something I wouldn't mind pursuing given the price (looks to be around $50 for SS fronts, and about the same for the back).

Default Give you the potential for major trouble

I've heard about several failures of these lines, and personally witnessed one. They are not exactly designed for a daily use road car that sees adverse/harsh environments.

I put them on my old '84 Porsche Carrera. Noticed absolutely no improvement in brake feel. I feel anybody who does is noticing the effect of new fluid and a good brake bleeding, NOT any change in the lines. Plus, many who do the change are also going to bigger brakes or competition-style pads.

After I witnessed the one line failure on a friend's car, I changed back to the OE lines. After trhe change, once again noticed no change in brake feel/performance.
