Default two packages of two wheels each ...

pack the wheels face-to-face. between the wheel faces, put a sandwich of padding->thick cardboard->thick cardboard->padding. then get access to a strapping machine and put 2-3 strapping bands around each package.

i've done this many times; never had a problem.

Default that will be more expensive ...

since you'll have to ship 4 packages instead of 2. you could try strapping 2 of the packages together (so you end up with 2 pairs of 2) but it will be more unwieldy. also, if the boxes aren't a tight fit they'll probably get destroyed.

Default "wheels" means "rims and tires" to me ...

if you only have rims, you'll need to go with the box approach.

i'd recommend using either ups or fedex.

make sure you use a strapping machine to secure the wheels to one another ... tape will not work at all.

Default by the way, shipping this stuff is not cheap ...

for instance, i just shipped out four tires (no rims) from massachusetts to colorado earlier this week, and it cost $105 via ups ground.

Default no boxes ...

the rubber from the tires is just exposed. don't worry, tires are tough ... short of puncturing them (and a box won't help you there), there's really no way to hurt them.

so, if you were to take a cross-section (top-to-bottom), it would look like:

1. piece of cardboard
2. one wheel, face down
3. padding
4. two pieces of cardboard
5. padding
6. one wheel, face up
7. cardboard

take this whole thing and put 2-3 straps around it and you're good-to-go.
