What's the mat on the underside of our hood for?

What's the mat on the underside of our hood for?
Most cars have it nowadays other than maybe Honda's, but all i know is that its a fire mat incase of an underhood fire, and that it also insulates sound because of it being a fire mat. Any other reasons why its there?

It is not for fire. It is for sound insulation. My euro 1.8TQ does not have it as audi wanted the car to be more vocal and sound more sporty.

hmm
thats odd, doesnt look like it could deaden the sound much, wheras it looks like it is designed to fall off the underside of the hood when a fire occurs and fall onto the engine, somewhat smothering it.
Then again, yours doesnt have it
