Where to buy Spare ECU for 2003 A4 1.8T
#5
JeffPGH, you are correct and there is more....
There is also a security feature in the new ECU that has to be cloned. As of right now, I think the only way to copy it is to 1. take to Dealer or 2. unsolder the chip from the board of the ecu.

umm, wouldnt having to swap ecu's be difficult when you are trying to chip one???
wouldnt make much sense to go to an audi dealer and buy an "extra" ecu so you can chip the other if they will ask for the "old" one in return.
doesnt make much sense
am i missing something?

I think you've been confused because of the word "swap" in JeffPGH's post...
On the B5 A4's, you could buy a spare ECU, get it chipped, then "swap" it with the stock ECU before a service visit.
For the B6 A4, you can no longer get a spare ECU. The reason you cannot get one is because Audi now requires that you turn in a defective ECU first, before they will sell you a new one...in other words, before Audi will sell you a spare ECU, you need to "swap" an old one for it.
I currently do not know of any non-Audi sources for a spare B6 ECU :-(

really, i spoke with (via e-mail) with hoppen motorsport about a chip, they seems able . . .
to sell me a spare ecu. the hassle would be to have it programed like the first, so everything would work, including keys.
but then the problem remains. how can you chip while buying a spare ecu, when you have to turn in your other, the one you wish to chip?
