Default Who likes the shark fin antennas?

So many new Audi S4, A6, A8 ... now come with a shark fin GPS antenna on the back of the roof. I have to say that I like them about as much as a tattoo in the face of a hot chick or a big dent in my fender :-( I can't take my eyes off them and it ruins the whole impression. Do people actually like them, or is there such a compelling technical reason to make them so visible? Can't they be hidden a bit better? I never see any Mercedes with those fins, just Bimmers, but that's because of Chris Bangle who loves ugly cars. Is Audi going the same route?

Default Maybe the fin could be built in to the side mirrors.

Or, you could place a neat decal on it!

Ehh, I think the fin ruins the lines of the car. I don't have satellite or whatever so I wish I didn't have a fin.

Default I learned some new things about the fin at the Quattro Challenge today...

The fin houses antenas for satellite radio, on-star, AM/FM, and cell phone... it's an integrated package that's pre-wired for whatever telematics and other options the owner purchases. The satellite component only occupies the front section of the fin (according to the XM rep).

This info doesn't make the fin look better, but it does partially account for its size (still hard to believe that packing three or four separate RF components into one enclosure adequately mitigates interference, but I'm not an EE).

My conclusion is that Audi may revise the design of the fin if they receive enough feedback, but that it's unlike that they will unbundle an integrated system that provides obvious cost advantages...

PS, the quattro challenge was a blast.
