Why do most people hate manual transmissions?
Everyone I show my car to seems to like it. The say great things about how it looks, the nice interior, then all of a sudden they realize it has a MANUAL transmission. Then with horror in their eyes they say, "IT'S A MANUAL!" You would think I had a piece of crap laying on the seat by way they look at me.
Does anyone else get this reaction? What is go great about an automatic?
A few reasons I bought the manual:
-It is fun to drive.
-Slightly better on gas.
-Cheaper
-Cheaper to fix long term compared to an automatic. (Clutch vs. Automatic rebuild.)
-Higher degree of control of how the car responds.
-Quicker 0-60

Definately agree with longer life thing, esp on older cars. My left ankle is completely shot though.
(whine) It is really bad. A full day in one of those stiff-clutched B2s and my ankle is howling for a week. (sigh) I will never get the classic Porsche of my dreams unless there is a surgical procedure in advance of it. (sympathy is appropriate)

Convenience. Too lazy to learn ? Too much traffic ? I know some people who should never drive a
manual, even though I think a manual is the way to go. Poor coordination, poor attention, etc. Some other folks have physical limits.
The thing I hate the worst is to see a nicely tricked hot fast looking car come in for service, only to find it's a regular automatic (CVT exempted). It's like most of the highly modded Jettas out there are regular 4cyl automatic GL (base) models.

I love my A4, but let's be realistics...it's NOT a sports car.
A sports car should have a manual transmission...not a 4 door sedan. I decided MANY years ago that I would NEVER 'shift' a sedan. Yeah, the A4 is a 'sporty-ish' sedan...but it's still a sedan. If you wanted a sports car, you should have bought one.
Don't even get me started on the idea of shifting a station wagon!!!
All kidding aside...one of the problems with manual transmissions is the people who have them and they attitude they have that they are 'real' drivers while those of us with autos are not. My grandmother used to drive a manual. Big fat hairy deal.
