What I know is that the OHSRAM & Philips brands stayed pretty darn close to their stated color rendering as compared to their Asian counterparts...
I've experimented w/some off-shoot Asian brands (not knocking them as some were good to very good, for the price) and their color rendering compared to their rated temperature were off by atleast 600k.
Case in point, the McCulloch brand...
This make, IMHO is very good compared to other asian brands but not as good as the Euro ones, hence, the price break. But anyways, the 5000k rated bulbs were more like 4300k and the 6000k were more like 5000k-5400kish. The other asian brand I bought (forget the name & kinda cheap) had rated bulbs at 5000k and them appeared to be dead nuts. So go figure.
My suggestion is to compare the RoverSport, side-by-side to what is a known xenon bulb temp (fairly new bulb) and then go from there.
I've seen many newer cars recently (CTS, Saab, etc.) that are xenon that appear to be different in color rendering so to stab at a RoverSport would def. not help you.
You gotta go, side-by-side, then pull the trigger.
I hope that helps.

Totally helps, thank you.
Good call on the side-by-side comparison... that's probably my best bet. I know, random question about the Rover. Figured you of all people might have a good feel for what was close to it.
I was starting to think that HID lights were still a very much, "you get what you pay for" market as there's such a noticeable price difference and your experience seems to confirm this. I'll steer clear of the others and buy probably buy some Osram / Phillips... probably from SUVlights.com
Okay, I just read thru your HID related posts... the 5Ks you picked up from Jackson Chan @ AZ... those are pretty close! What brand were those and what are you running now? That'll give me a good starting point so I can end this ridiculous quest for HIDs.
Thanks man!

and BRIGHT! lol [They are bright, right?]
BTW, I did the next best thing to a side by side comparison and scoured Range Rover forums till I found the answer... those lights are a true bright white... probably a high quality 4500K- 5K.
So a McCulloch 6K, that's about 4-6K less than true like you said, might be a perfect match.
I think we have a winnah.
