Why is so hard to do what you're supposed to do: Coil pack rant inside...(long)

So...driving through the mountains of CO yesterday, I get a solid CEL...no biggie, I'll VAG when I get home. About 2 miles from home, get a rough idle and a blinking CEL. Pull over, turn the car off, back on again, and now solid CEL. Car runs like a$$, but no blinking CEL. Get home, pull the codes, and get random misfire code and misfire Cylinder 1. OK. So, perhaps my NGK coppers need to be changed. I got "all" of my coilpacks changed 2 years or so ago with the recall. I get the new plugs, put them, and what to my surprise...cylinder 1 still has the "J" coilpack! WTF!!!!!! All of the other 3 are the "L" July of 2003 revision. On my work order it states that they changed ALL of the coil packs. I would have been mighty upset had I been stranded at 11,000 feet because some dolt forgot to upgrade my coilpacks.
Anyway...haven't tested the car since changing the plugs, but I almost guarantee the misfire will still be there, in which case I'll start swapping coil packs to confirm.
End rant.

I completly understand your position on these coil packs. I just posted about what to do etc. when a coil pack goes out.
I was told they were all changed. Then another went bad and they replaced. Recently, one more went bad, (75,000) so now I keep one in my trunk.
Cheap at $20 but there never is a good time when they go out.

and I've had 2 original coil packs fail in so many weeks. (lasted ~36K miles) Good thing I had a new spare on hand each time. Audi should have recalled all "J" coils, not just those of a particular build date/lot.
I have replaced 2 failed "J" coils with 2 "L" coils, but I am going to order 4 of the newest version "N" coil packs instead of buying 2 more "L" versions. The downside is that the "N" coils are ~$49.00 ea, more that twice the cost of the "L" version. And, last I checked, they are on national back order with 2500+ pending orders.

Mine fail fairly regularly. I keep a spare in the trunk, and changed one on the way to work a few months ago. I leav my engine cover off, so it takes less than 5 min to try them until I get the bad one
