Default Different oil companies meet mfg or industry standards. M1 0w40, Castrol are the only ones in USA.

ACEA A3 would be the industry standard, VW 502, 503.01 are the mfg standards and API "SL" is the basic US standard that will not harm you car TOO much.

Default Syntec 0w30, a very special oil.Made for your car & factory-fill.AutoZone only.5w40's not free

You will have to pay the cost. If you are going 10,000 miles it is one of the few oils I'd do it on. M1 0w-40 meets specs too, and is a great choice. As far as 5w-30 synths go, there are few that will work well, it's junk. Try easy=to-find Syntec 5w-50 if you are expecting it to be hot where you live. If you want the dealer Syntec 5w-40 from Belgium (I use it in summer) ask ahead of time at parts dept to be sure they have it for you. Ask for the TDI oil. Try your local AutoZone for the red-label 0w-30 Syntec, you might have to dig in the back of the rack and storage area. It says "Made n Germany" if they have it you are set for 10,000 miles, great mpg, low consumption and a great Gummi bear smell.

Default Just top it off. Oil consumption is NORMAL in 1.8t during break-in period.

Mine consumed about 2qt's up until around 6500 miles. (Standards say; "1qt per 1K miles"). My first OCI was at 10K. You can just use any OTC crude, since your OCI is very soon. Get 0W/5W-30/40 dino or synth.

Pretty sure factory fill is Castrol Syntec 0W-30. If you just want convenience and oils from Castrol or Mobil, then follow Audi Junkies advice and get those for topping off and fill at 5K OC service. But at your 5K OC service, if you want something better, I'd highly recommend getting Motul 8100 Ester E-Tech 0W-40. That's all you'll need until your next OCI.

[Oil] Food for Thought; <i>"VW is dumping Castrol".</i> They're not happy with the quality.

Default Stop by the Dealer if you can, they'll top it for free...

I did that the first time @ 1200 mi, and is I'll have to do it again today, maybe tomorrow @ 5K already.

I remember that the first time the tech guy told me that he "topped it" with 1.5 quarts, but never said anything about the type of oil.

I'd rather take it to the dealer since I know is a different oil type from factory, until the first change.

Ohh BTW, on 04, indeed the first service is at 5,000 mi, even though the "check" button on the console says that the service is due in 5,000 mi more. (10,000)

Default "VW's dumping Castrol, they're not happy with the quality"-I'm calling you on that, much speculation

in the secretive oil industry, very hard to pin down what is happening. One thing is for sure, Audi and BMW did like Castrol enough to make it their official oil. It also passed all of their most modern test sequences. Sure, Formula R is the new shizzle, but Syntec 0w-30 is the best otc oil available here is the US. It has esters that actually crawl out of the bottle! Anyway, I think that once you have a stay-in-grade oil that has suffieient TBN for extended use, cold-cranking, etc...one brand over another is mostly personal preference and whatevery lets you sleep at night.
How about we start our own oil forum? I am suspended from BitOG again, those guys can't concieve of anything beyond an ASE-certified mechanic. They called me out on "why is my mechanic so special", insulting him and me in the process. I shot back with a pic of the pits at Watkins Glenn, private Porsche club event with cars they only see on TV. Voice over PA System- "ASE Master Mechanic needed for oil spill clean-up, bay 2" Ha ha, they hate me now. It was all over his recommendation of Syntec 5w-50. Turns out; Team PTG uses it in their M3. You know the one, Hans Stuck, Speed GT. Maybe Motul will make a move in the USA and sponsor a forum.

Default My number is XXX XXX XXXX

From what I have been told, it's not exactly a secret.... My Service Mng told me about this a while ago. Even MotulUSA knows. It does not really concern me though.

lol. That's funny, getting banned from an "oil" forum of all places. Are they all closed minded there? Oil is a funny thing for most. They really have no opinion except for what the major companies state or advertise or what all the "bought off" experts say. It's all too much big business and commercialized for me.
Hopefully Motul will make a move. I have had some good response from just posting it here and at least generated some "buzz". A few who track/race and others with bigger turbo kits and those who just wanted something different/better.

BTW; I changed the oil in my 1.8t Beetle (60K miles with Red Line oil mostly) and put in the Motul 8100 Ester E-Tech 0W-40 (replacing the Kendall GT-1 Full Synth 5W-40 that's been in for about 4K miles only) and I'd swear the engine feels like it is running smoother/better, with less vibration/resonance. I'm very sensitive to my cars changes and it difinitely feels a bit better. Even more responsive. Yeah, I know, it's all in my head ; ) Not. This schtuff is good. My Beetle is a good car to experiment in because it is mod'd (about 200hp) and I drive it a little harder. I'll soon be changing all the oils/fluids in my A4 to Motul (but using the 300 V 5W-40).

Default That's what I mean. Shop Mangers would say "no good" even if the reason was a $.02 price increase.

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/27563/wg01.jpg"></center><p>Syntec 5w-50 is a pretty good catch-all oil. My mechanic uses by the drum and claims it protecs better on the track then M1 15w-50. Those Forum guys are so brain-washed by Mobil, they CANNOT concieve something else might be better. I took the heat just for being the messenger of a guy with 30 years as a Porsche/Audi expert who holds a competition race licence. Excuse me.
