Default Winter or seasonal tires?

I live in Toledo, Ohio and we just had are first snow fall...I was all over the road. I need to invest in some winter tires. What ones would everyone suggest? I am willing to spend a good amount for my safety.

Also, some years it snows alot and some years very little, should I get pure winter tires or seasonal tires? Is there a big difference?

Thanks for the help.

If you're serious about your safety, invest in winter tires.

Default I would invest in a winter tire/wheel package. Very easy to swap..

and the winter tires will make a huge difference when compared to all-season models. This will also save on treadwear, making both setups last much longer. There are several vendors that have great deals on packages and you can also check the AudiWorld classifeds for some great deals as well.

Default huge difference between all-seasons and winter tires

My all-time favorite is the Dunlop SP Wintersport M2.

Default 2 sets of all-seasons is cost-effective. Keep the good set for only winters, after some wear, summer

I have 4 mounted sets, but lets just focus on the 3 all-season sets. I do a winter / intermediate(spring/fall) / summer rotation. The benefits are obvious. I always have the right amount of tread for the seasons and never have to throw away a tire with any tread. For summer, who needs tread? I kinda like haveing a set of "smokers" that I can abuse. Summer hot pavment wears down a fresh set like crazy anyway. You can do the same basic thing with 2 sets. New tires are good for the first two winters, really good especially if you are talking about something like Conti Extremes or Dunlop Sport A2/SP5000. After two winters, leave them on for summer and put you next new set on the other rims. imo snows especially in large sizes/low profiles are a terrible investment. They guys who spend $600-$700 for a set of snows and put them on from Thanksgiving to St.Patrick's are getting a beat deal. The thing is that snows wear faster then all-seasons and are useless after 1/2 tread is gone. At least all-seasons are good for summer smokers after they are worn. See?

Default You should try some Conti Extremes in snow. Dunlop SP A2 and Pirelli P6 are good too.

Default You need 2 sets of wheels. And yes get real snow tires.

1 for summer tire setup and 1 or the snow tire setup.

Default $6-700 for quicker wearing winter tires is fine for me.

For many of us that spend a fair amount of time in the mtns when it is snowing snow tires are the only way to go. With most snow storms here the passes are closed or have chain restrictions in place. Some passes will only allow 4wd vehicles and those with approved snow tires. This situation happened to us 2 weeks ago, the state patrol had a checkpoint setup and were only allowing 4wd vehicles with snow/winter tires to proceed. Everyone else was being exited off the road. I think 4wd with M&S tires were allowed, but i don't understand the restrictions completly. All i know is we were allowed to procede. Alot of people here with small SUV's put snow tires on come thanksgiving anyways.

When it comes to my families safety and trying to keep the car under control snow tires are very worth while.

I am not saying that everyone needs a hardcore snow tire (studded hakka's), but i see it as cheap insurance. There is no reason to skimp on tires to keep the car under control in adverse weather conditions.
