I'm cursed in that my B6 came with the 17inch wheel option. I love the look but every tire is more expensive in that size. I'd prefer 16" instead. Are there any other changes that came with the option or did the factory just throw on bigger wheels/tires?
I'm looking for a moderately priced ($600-$800) winter tire setup. Even if it's just tires I'm willing to use my existing rims. However, I can't seem to find any 235/45R17 tires for under $190CDN. Once you add fees, taxes, etc that throws it up to around $1000.
Any ideas? Is anyone on here from the Vancouver area and willing to swap their 16s for my 17s?
Looking for advice on how to proceed. I did find a used & mismatched snow tire & rim setup for $1295 here, but the mismatching worries me and it's still bloody expensive. I can get 16" tires for $150 each which is a much better price but then I need to get rims.
I'm only planning to keep this car for 1-2years so bear in mind I don't want to make any massive investments.
Thanks in advance.

It is better to have narrow tire for snow than wider tire. Wider tire acts like skies.
Tirerack has some decent winter tires within your price range. General Altimax Arctic got good review.

YOu can also go with the Continental Extreme contact DSW ultra high perf all season. Can't go wrong with those.
If you already have good tires... might want to consider wheel and tire combination. Get 4 set of 16 inch steel wheels and put decent winter tires. The thought of miss matched tires gives me the creeps.

I don't know the CDN price, but I was really happy with my Hankook Icebear tires on my allroad. Very good on both cold dry roads and in snow. Maybe not the best in super deep stuff, but for most winter use, excellent and a good price.

Because I got the car so late and am therefore ordering tires late in the season there wasn't much left.
Ordered some Arctic Claw TXI tires in 235/45R17.
Around $920CDN for four, mounted and balanced with lifetime flat repairs and all the goodies.
I'll see how they turn out.
Thanks for the advice.

Go for the dedicated winter tires - not the "performance" winter tires. Something like the WS60 and go as thin as possible, like 195 or 206 x 16.
