Winter tires/rims - 3.0 quattro/sport package
Anyone had any problems with standard 16" steel rims with winter tires? Dealer states I need 205/55/16 tires (no problem with that) AND alloy rims from Audi at about $200/wheel - actually $380 Canadian (big problem with that!). Appreciate any input. Thanks.
P.S. Don't suggest tirerack.com - I don't think they ship to Canada.

Don't listen to your dealer, steel wheels are fine.
Actually both 205 and 215 tires will work. The stock tire size that comes with the 16" wheels is 215/55/16. However, when buying snow tires the rule of thumb is to get one size smaller (more narrow) than stock. Since you have the 3.0 I would get the 215's.

Re: Where are you located Jaws
London.
Since I posted, have arranged with a local tire retailer to have Pirelli 210 Snowsports (205/55R-16 - in response to Shaun, more than one dealer has indicated that this is the correct size for this vehicle - also check the excellent article on winter tires in the December 2001 issue of European Car) on plain steel wheels.
Thanks to all who responded.

Re: Winter tires/rims - 3.0 quattro/sport package
As stated, steelies are fine. However, most dealerships are selling the Tango (and perhaps others) @ about $100/wheel now. That's the route I went. I bought the Tangos and a set of 215/55/16 Dunlop SP Winter Sport M2 tires. Now, my ride still looks good, and it rips through snow like a champ!
Here's a link to the Tango wheel. Check with your Audi dealer to see if these puppies are still on sale!

http://www.clairparts.com/shop/accessories.cfm?do=buy&&pid=1586</a

To all involved, look inside the door sill for correct tire sizes
You can get Alloy rims for $210.00CAD each, that is what I was quoted from Tire Mag (see web site too). You were being soaked!
But I went with 16" Steel($78.00each), just fine and Michelin Pilot Alpins - Great!

Re: please post pics of your A4 w/steel wheels.
EricPA,
Could you please post some pics of your car with the steel wheels. I'm debating whether or not to go with alloys for my winter set. Thanks!
