Wiper motor rebuild?

Driving home in the rain today, my wipers all of a sudden seized up on me in the middle of the windshield (pouring rain, nice). After a couple minutes they resumed but were stop-and-go, and they finally settled down and began running perfectly backwards (stopped at the top of the travel, instead of the bottom, moving down towards the bottom of the windshield and back up again).
This has happened to me before, and the dealer rebuilt the wiper gear configuration or something. While I'm sure they would be happy to do this again, does anyone know if this is something I could just do myself? It's a full hour to my local dealer, and I don't have that kind of time...
