I don't think the center light use LED's...
If you notice, both lights illuminates at about the same time (at least in the B6)... I think Audi use small bulbs but not LED's... You can easily find that some of the cars with thrid light in the sopiler have LED's illuminates much quicker than the other break lights...

BMW only did this because its their "adaptive brake light" system. if Audi thinks its a good feature
then they'll do it. but personally I think its stupid, and the LED's just look good. they're not any safer

I'm almost positive they are LEDs...multiple little LEDs, like on the Volvos and on the BMWs
(for the center brake light). It does light up MUCH quicker than the normal brake lights.
I think it was the B5 that had the multiple little light bulbs in the center brake light.

Even the sedans WITHOUT LED's HAVE the adaptive break lights...
All the 3-Series build after march 2003 have the Adaptive Break Lights even without LED's... The break light will be "Brighter" when you break so hard...
