XM radio option

While haggling for the price I wanted, I ended up dropping the $750.00 dealer installed XM radio option. Does anyone know if the equipment can be installed outside of the dealership, to connect to the factory head unit?. I'd like to take advantage of the head unit's built in XM functionality. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Haven't used it since my free trial subscription ran out a few months ago.
Only hard part is I haven't researched long enough on how to take it out. I believe all the B6's are pre-wires... all you need to do is attach the SAT Receiver and VAG-COM it.

If yes you need only the SAT receiver (about $450 from clair parts). The install is DIY if you follow these steps: Factory XM Radio Self-Install.
If your car is not pre-wired its much more work, but still not impossible. You will need a new HU and the SAT receiver but you may be able to use the cd-changer harness to connect the SAT receiver to your HU. There was a write up here in the A6 C5 forum a while ago, but the search doesn't work the well right now.
In any case, if you get a new XM receiver you should look for 8E0 057 593E, the older part 8E0 057 593A does not work with the RNS-E navigation unit (in case you will ever consider the upgrade).

I just realized I posted on the B6 forum. I just bought a B7, picked it up last night. Yes, the HU is SAT enabled. Does this change any of your advice (much appreciated, by the way..)?
I will never add the navigation package to this car. Does that mean I can look on eBay or elsewhere for the older part 8E0 057 593A? Do you know if it's compatible with the B7 HU? Thanks again.

that in case you don't have the Navigation plus nor the Tire Pressure Monitoring System, you can use either of both part numbers. If you have Nav+ or TPMS you must use the "E" device.
So, yes, you can look for any XM receiver if you don't plan to install the Nav+. And congratulations for the new car.
