Default XPOST - frigid, dry winters winters, lots of ice - Are Dunlop M3s the way to go? 215 or 205/55/R16?

Winnipeg Manitoba. Middle of the bald prairies. Frequently gets to -30C. We can get a lot of snow, but it is dry snow, not wet and slushy (except for spring thaw). Lots of heavy groove ice build-up on roads.

I have a set of 16x7 wheels - Should I do Dunlop M3's? In 215 or 205/55/16?

Going on an 05 A4 Ultrasport.

215/55/16 is the recommended size.

You may want to consider the Nokian Hakkapellitta series as well.

Default I think you'll be okay with an M3.

Dry/crunchy ice, and dry snow are reasonable grippy, so you won't have too much of an issue with the M3's, and the firmer sidewall will be welcome during high speed driving. If you want maximum grip on the ice, consider a studded ice tire...but you will give up high speed handling and stability to get that extra grip.

If you have to deal with glare/smooth ice frequently, then I might suggest one of the Nokian ice tires (studded or not).

I did a winter driving school up in NH one year with Nokian WR's (essentially an aggressive all season). It was bitterly cold that year, and the snow was very dry. I was surprised at how much grip was available on dry snow, as I rarely see that kind of snow down in Philly). The M3's are more aggressive than the WR's. You should find them to work well for you up in the great white north.
