i'm at about 9700 miles on my car, and it's telling me i need a service within the next 100 miles. i presume it's for the 10k service. but the girl at the dealership told me i don't need one 'til 15k. is this true? do i really not need an oil change for 10k miles?!

Ok with the B6 at the 5k service you have to reset the adaption values of the instrument cluster for the 15k. However on the B7 when I attemp to do this it won't allow it. Basically the only way is to change the oil quality, however if you leave it to the oil quality designated for the US, the change isn't possible. So basically Audi made a mistake somewhere, that's why they reset it and it stays at 5K intervals. Probably not a bad idea if you bought the car to change oil every 5K. I did a 5K on a 2.0 with 14K, probably gonna see one of the first 2.0 sludge motors.

IMO, synth oil or not, waiting one year/ 10,000 miles between oil changes, particularly with a high-compression four-cylinder motor with a turbocharger, is completely crazy.
I have my car on 6 mo/ 5k mile (whichever comes first) oil change intervals -- were it not for using synth oil, I'd double the number of oil changes. Oil is a key to long engine life, and if you don't want to do it yourself, a dealer should take care of it for about $100. (Sorry, but with a proprietary filter and tool required, you can't go to Jiffy Lube for this one...)

Perhaps its overkill, but at 10K I had one done, and will continue every 5K (whether Audi is paying or not ...) My dealer (DCH in Maplewood NJ) was reasonable, the cost was around $75 or so.
Of course, I put close to 30K a year on cars, and I love my A4, so I'd like to last.

I'm at 9800 miles right now and going in for an oil change and tire rotation.
On the B7, when they reset the service indicator, it resets at 5000 mile (and 1 year) intervals.
I don't know if that was intentional when they wrote the code or if it was an "error", but it's reality.
There is no 10000 mile service required under the normal maintenance schedule and it won't be covered under Audi's Advantage service plan.
But, I'm getting mine changed anyway.... for peace of mind if nothing else.

While most folks put more than 5000 miles per year on their car, some might not put a full 10000.
When you reset the "phantom" service notice it resets for 5000 miles and one year.
Some low milage drivers that want to stick strictly to the Audi Advantage service schedule could possibly exceed the annual service requirement(irrespective of milage) if they don't understand how the indicator resets.
