Default 1st Gear Absent?

I just leased an 06 Audi A4 and have noticed that 1st gear is rarely ever engaged. For example, at a dead stop if I give half gas, it shifts into 2nd before it revs past 1000 in 1st. Is something wrong with my transmission? I can use 1st while in tiptronic mode. Any suggestions?

Default tip

Try using S mode to let it rev higher beofre it shifts

Or keep it in Tip and choose.

Default It's perfectly normal

The TIP has two programmed modes "D" and "S"

"D" is designed to give you decent performance and the best fuel economy. It shifts out of 1st as fast as possible (literally) and will run the highest gear it can to maximize economy. That's why you'll see it in 6th cruising 30 mph. (Benefits of the 2.0T's fantastic torque "curve")

"S" is the sport mode. It's programmed to provide the best performance and will hold the gears much longer to keep the revs up. It's a much more sporting ride, but can actually be a tad harsh for everyday commuting. You'll also notice that your fuel economy will drop like a green Mosler safe.

Frankly, I find the TIP mode more of an aggrivation than a benefit. It shifts too slow and really doesn't provide me the feel of shifting manually. I really only use it when driving in snow.

Default Does this still happen when you "punch it"?

My old M-B sedan (e300) would always start in 2nd gear. No quick shifts to second, it would just start in second from a stand still. Unless I punched it. Then it would hesitate for a split second while it shifted to 1st, then take off. I actuallly liked it.

Miss that car...
