Default 640 servotronic

Maybe I missed the thread here but not sure if anybody has pulled the 640 servotronic yet from their A4 but decided to give it a try today.

Initially I thought you would have to remove the cover by the knees to get at the servo, but guess you don't. If you do want to remove it, there are three screws that needs to be removed, one on the lower left, one on the lower right and one located near the fusebox, much easier to remove than the B5. Do note that the screw on lower left is slightly larger than the other two which I failed to do! Oh well.

Remove the knee bolster by gently pulling it down and the tabs on the top will slip out. Watch out for the wiring harness for the HEXCOM plug and the light for the wire but you don't need to remove these.

The servotronic is located as shown below....

And the thing itself....

Of course after seeing this I realized you could probably remove it without removing the cover as I have done if your hands are small enough to get into there.

Driving impressions...

The steering is at least 3-4 times heavier at low speed. Driving in the city you will notice it. Take a slow 90 degree turn and you will feel that the steering wheel will want to unwind. I didn't see any warning lights come up... and don't know if any codes were thrown since I don't have one of those expensive HEXCOM cable handy.

The other thing I noticed, maybe it's just me, but braking at low speed, I need to push the pedal a bit more. Again, this could just be me wanting to think this but putting the servotronic back in, the brake pedal felt a bit more sensitive.

Given that I drive quite a bit in the city, I decided to put it back in but if you're ones that complain about the light steering at low speeds, this might be the trick for you. I'd be interested if there are any A4 drivers from Europe that are here and see if they have this 640 servotronic or not.

I like the light steering at low speeds. its the tightness in the turns at speed that surprises me

Default No warnings, no damage

Did recall somebody on AZ doing this for quite a while now, he checked for fault codes - none.
