Default About winter tires

I'm getting a 3.2 which comes with 17-inch all-season tires. I will want to get snow tires when the time comes.

On my last A4 had 17-inch summer tires and I switched these in the winter for 16-inch snow tires on steel rims.

Apparently, I can't do this with the new car - it has to have alloys. So.... do I have to get 17-inch alloy rims for the snow tires or better to get 16-inch or doesn't it matter?

Wish I could get summer performance tires on the 17-inch rims....... (don't want to get the s-line).

Default Good luck in finding 16's that clear the front brakes

I ended up just using my stock 17s as my winter rims.

So you use the same rims for summer and winter and just change the tires?

And they're all around $90 each.

Tire size should be 215/55/16.

If you want to order over the phone, you can contact Gary at TireRack at 1-877-522-8473 ext 386. I've ordered items from him before and it's painless, plus sometimes nice to talk to a human.

The other option would be to get some 17" winter tires on your stock rims (225/45/17 size will work), and then come spring buy 18" alloys with summer tires (235/40/18).

Default Went with 16" Sport Edition F7 / Toyo 215/55/16

I currently have the stock 235/45R/17 Conti's on the stock split 5-spoke 17" Audi alloys. I went with Sport Edition F7 (16") with Toyo Garit HT 215/55R/16. They're ready to go on when the snow flies. I'm in Canada, and buy from the fine folks at tiretrends.com. Great shop.

I have had nothing but success on Toyo winter tires... 2 sets of truck tires and 3 for cars. They are excellent in all respects.

A few rules to drive by:

If you drive in snow or on icy roads you *need* snow tires.

No, "all seasons" are not as good. Not even close.

Get "narrower" tires for the winter, but keep the circumference identical as possible. Try to downsize an inch (or 2!) on your rim diam., if you can. This is more important in deep snow, where you want to "dig" down, as opposed to ride on top.

Get separate wheels. Yes it costs more, but you save plenty on mounting and rebalancing costs. Plus, mounting tires is tough on them.

Default Good info, but FWIW I was told 235/45/17, not 225...

...last week by Gary @ TireRack. Apparently the extra tire is recommended due the to weight of the car.
