my friend has either an '06 or '07 and it is a **** control. Apparently the surface of the touch screen has a tendency to fail much sooner than a **** control (I think something having to do with the coating wearing off with repeated use).

The RNS-E will play movies from an external DVD player only through a separate media adapter, which you must purchase in addition to your DVD player.
The RNS-E will play DVD movies from an external source without requiring the VIM hack, but only at speeds of less than 5 mph IIRC. The VIM (video in motion) hack bypasses this restriction to allow video to be played while the car is moving.
So the VIM hack is not strictly required to play video on the RNS-E screen, but the external media adapter is.
