As stated in my earlier post I am going to do some paint testing. With new 3m stone glaze you can seal the paint over the plastic chrome and you won't have a problem with chips.

I have a buddy that runs a tint shop and does excellent work with the vinyl. He did a black A8 not too long ago that came out looking sweet.
I supposed you could go either way, and if you're color matching paint would be the only way to go.

I did it on my A3.. This picture is with it just tested with electrical tape like yours but I now did it for real.. In the pick the emblems are painted black and the corner lights are taped off.. The lights are now painted.. The emblem is still off waiting to be repainted.
The part that takes so long is removing the chrome.. you can't paint over chrome and have it stay the surface is too smooth. I peeled off all of the chrome from the plastic and got some paint that actually etches in and bonds to the plastic.. 6K miles and not one chip or nick. My rings that I painted over the chrome were peeling after a few days.
took me about 4 hours once the chrome surround was off the car and bleeding finger tips to remove the chrome.
I used a right angle grinder with those scotch bright looking pads to scuff up the surface and it actually made the chrome pull away from the plastic.. Then starting on the back side as to not damage the plastic I peeled the chrome off.. Problem is its the thickness of tin foil only steel so its very very sharp, so I got sliced up pretty bad.. But its so worth it... Then sanded it all smooth to take care of any nicks I did make and painted it..
