Brake pads and rotors at 25,000 miles?

Had my car in for 25,000 mi service. Dealer called to say they want to do a front brake job. They said the pads have worn to 2MM and the rotors are down to 27mm with 29 mm being the minimum. They were clear that this was not a result of the pads being bad and damaging the rotors, but the rotors being evenly worn down. They want $650 to do the front. Since I am in West Los Angeles I will go to Jose at Euro Tech, whos said that at 25,000 mi the rotors should not be below the minimum 29mm. I am generally easy on the car, especially on the brakes. I have never had the rotors wear on any of me previous Audi's. Wonder about the dealers call on this. They tried to tell me the car is unsafe to drive, which is a real indicator they are not being real straight. I also had another coil pack fail and got them to change the bad one and remaing 2. Sad that the A4 is still prone to this.

You should get a warning light in the dash when the front pads are below spec...as for the rotors wearing down that much in 25000 miles, I'd suspect they were either bad or your dealer is trying to make a quick buck out of you..unless of course you're taking the car around a race track? ;-)
Have a look at the front rotors yourself...do you see a noticeable lip forming around the edge? If not, then you're probably OK. Best case is to remove the wheel and check the rotors with a caliper.

rotors are soft and usually wear as quickly as the pads.(thats why you see so much brake dust on your wheels) take the gamble if you want, but don't be surprised if in the next 5-10k you get a noticeable vibration under braking due to under spec rotors unable to dissipate heat and thus causing them to warp. usually normal wear on front brakes comes between 20-35k depending on driving style.

So it's possible for a pad to be under 2mm and the wear indicator to stay off.
That said, unless he's driving the car hard, the rotors should NOT be 2mm below min. Just take the car elsewhere. Get everything in writing from the dealer and if Jose determines they are okay, get the measurements in writing and file a complaint with AoA and the Better Business Bureau. These dealers need to understand they are not beyond reproach.

1. Maybe the pads are shot. It's possible if you do track events. They are like $250 on the high side, installed.
2. If you need pads and rotors, there was a defect somewhere, but no way would I pay $650.
I have had mine done at the dealer (pads and rotors, front) and I think it was $450.

around the edges. Check the pads by looking at the outer ones and stick yer head behind the wheel to look at the inner ones.
If you can't do this, take it to another shop for a inspection and see what they say.
All depends on your driving style but since you mention that you're easy, they should be fine. I swapped my factory front pads out at 68k and still had life in them (not even down enough to trigger the sensor). Same things with rotors.
If they do need to be replaced, find a independent shop or do it yourself. Parts for pads and rotors should come out to around $200 or so and take you a couple of hours to do. No need to pay them $115+/hour to do the brakes.

I've got 35k on mine, with 12mm left of pad, despite 400+ miles of track time.
But granted I have a 6MT and know how to drive-so at street legal speeds I don't use the brakes often.

The OEM discs are 30mm thickness.
Mine were at 29mm and 29.1mm when I replaced the pads at 25k miles. I expect them to be at about 28mm when I replace them at ~50k.
How yours would get to 27mm in the same mileage, I don't know.
Indie shop will do the job for $400-$450 WITH discs... $150-$200 for pads only.
