It came on over the weekend. It stayed steady (not flashing)
I have an appointment to leave it with dealer Thursday night and pick up a loaner car.
The light went off by itself yesterday on my way home. I went into a hardware store looking for ice melt, came out, started car and light was off.
It's still off.
If it doesn't come back on, do I keep appointment with dealer or call it a Christmas miracle and cancel?
thanks

Those kind of lights will go away after a few days. The code will stay there in memory so have the dealer check it to verify the cause.

I started it up...waited for a few minutes for the RPM's to drop. As soon as I put it in reverse, the light came on and stayed on. The next morning called the dealer, made an appointment and drove it there (about 10 mi). The light did stay on the whole time though. They replaced 2 ignition coils that were causing cylinder misfires.
Are you noticing any strange vibrations? It can't hurt to bring it in and have them check it out.

This seems to happen way to often in Audi's at least in my own personal experience. In 15 previous years of owning cars from Toyota to Chevy to Honda I don't ever actually remembering this dreaded light coming on. In two years of owning an Audi A3 and an A4 I have had this issue on and off on both cars. The A4 was due to ignition coils going out..and then going out again...the A3 will just go on every once in a while and seems to go out the same day or next day and stay off for weeks or months until it happens again. I had it checked once and nothing came up so now I just live with it now. From my pespective and experience I have been less than impressed with this issue and any further reliability issues will no doubt make me look long and hard before dropping another $30K + on an Audi.

It happened right after I jumped on it pulling out of a parking lot. It did kind of shutter like it was going to stall or something, didn't and has been running fine since that one little burp.
and to all the gas cap questions, i'm a freak about clicking the thing down. and I'd burned half a tank before it happened in the first place.
guess I'll take it in and see what they say.
