My 2006 does not have any "lights on" indicator in the instrument cluster. It does have a small green headlight icon to the right of the rotary headlight switch that lights up when the lights engage. I verified this by pulling in and out of my garage while the switch was left on the auto setting. When I entered my dark garage, the auto fnction turned on the lights and the icon lit up. When I pulled out, the lights went off and the icon went dark.
So...there was a change in this function from the 2005.5 to the 2006 production. The 2005.5 does have the lit icon in the instrument cluster...where it's much easier to see.

Mine works exactly as you describe in your car.
Sounds like there have been running changes that can't be tied to a specific model year.
