I had a Silver B5 S4, that I wore out. I still miss that car. I still have the S2000, my summer beater.
There is a change you can make to correct the mileage. Here it is...
Module 17 (Instruments), Adaptation channel 03
- Affects: Instantaneous Fuel Consumption, Average Fuel Consumption, Range, & Distance to Empty
- Default: 100%
- Range of values: 85 - 115%

(facing the pass side window) Push the top and bottom of that rocker switch and watch the trip computer cycle through the different options.

re: I haven't figured out how to get the trip computer to show figures for the entire tank.
Press the reset button on the bottom of the wiper stalk BRIEFLY. That should move you between trip computer mode 1 and trip computer mode 2. Mode 1 automatically zeros if the car is turned off for more than 2 hours. Mode 2 only resets when you hold the reset button for a few seconds. (Manual also describes the process).
