Default high pitched faint whistle sound

hello...

great board...i have received a lot of good info...

i have a 2006 a4 2.0T with 700 miles on it... it is one sah-weet ride ... smooth and powerful...

one question though...

whenever i drive and hit 18-20 mph, i start to hear a high pitched noise...like a faint whistle...or like a faint wind coming through the air vents...it's a high pitched noise that most people may not hear, but i have good hearing...i continue to hear this noise as long as i press the gas and go above 20 mph...is this "turbo whistle?"

i've asked a similar question before, but i think the sound is more high pitched than before...is it because the engine is broken in with 700 miles now?

thanks...

Default Re: Prob the Turbo.

Mine sometimes makes a slightly different noise depending on how warm the engine is. I've noticed that if the turbo is spooled up when the engine is still cold (I live in SoFLA btw, so read accordingly) it makes a different noise than when it has gotten a chance to warm up.

Default Whistle...

What gear are you in (or rev range)... full throttle... ?

I know if I hit around 5000RPM and higher, and at full throttle in any gear, I hear a faint whistling sound. Drive through a underpass/tunnel, and you really really hear the whistling sound. Caught the attention of a ricer one day in an underpass and noticed he was trying to figure out where that noise was coming from and probably never suspected it to be from me.

i'm still working in my car (700 miles) so i have not hit 5000 rpm...

my question is about the faint high pitched whistling sound (like wind coming through the air vents)...i hear it when i hit 20 mph and continue to hear it as long as i press on the gas and go over 20 mph...

Sounds like its the dreaded air whistle.
Ok is it inside or outside?
Its sounds like the air whistle of the gap between the mirror and the glass on the drivers (or passenger) windows.
There is a small gap and the whistle is the road wind passing betwwen it, some guys have fixed it by cutting a piece of thin black flexible tube and putting it in the gap.
It only occurs at speed so it may be that, so Id search the forum for it, using mirror whistle etc

Default Turbo?

Is it the whine of the turbo spinning up?

Default Your B7 is broken, definately have the dealer take apart the block and see what's going on...

that's really not normal.

No idea - talk to the service department at your dealership.
