Yeah it's stupid. After first 5k service the interval is 10k but the light still goes on every 5k.
You would figure they would switch the service light to come on at 10k intervals...whatever.

I don't know if the B7 is different in this respect, but on the B6...
the service intervals were every 10k miles, but the car recommended services every 5k.
Maybe they changed things around though since you have to pay for all services now.

They can change the service light interval with VAG. And they will if you ask them to.
The SERVICE light interval is selectable with VAG to either 5,000 miles or 10,000 miles.
It comes from the factory set at 5,000 miles because the first scheduled service is at 5,000 miles. After that, the scheduled service interval becomes 10,000 miles, but your SERVICE light is still set to go off at 5,000 if the dealer didn't change the interval during the 5k service.
Anecdotal experience here shows that few dealers change the light interval during the 5k service without you asking them to.
Why? Well, I suspect there are a few reasons for that.
1) It's not listed as a required step for the service
2) Since it's not a required item they don't waste their technician time doing it. They just use the stalk method to reset the light as opposed to changing the interval with the computer.
3) It doesn't break their heart when the light comes on at 10k and folks come for "service", only to be told that it's not required yet. I'm betting that many folks, already being at the dealer, get it done anyway on their own dime.
I get my car serviced every 5k regardless of the Service light, so it's never bothered me.
If your light comes on and your next scheduled service is not due, simply follow the instructions in the owner's manual to reset the light manually. It won't change the interval, but the light won't come on again for anther 5k.

Re: i thought we were supposed to go in at 10k for service. dealer says its not until 15k???
The reason is that the dealers don't want to cover the service charges for 10K,20K, etc. Eventhough the owners manual strongly suggests to do so. And to make things worse they gladly deactivate the service light for those intervals!!
