Newbie here - I have a stock 2006 A4 2.0T which I want to look a little sportier. I'm open to getting new wheels and lowering the vehicle. What is the best way to go about this without affecting the ride too much?

stasis streetsport coilovers are best for not affecting ride quality<ul><li><a href="http://www.stasisengineering.com">http://www.stasisengineering.com</a</li></ul>

The coilovers got the car lowered where I wanted it (1" lower front than stock and 1/2" lower than stock rear - SLine). This gives a decent drop but still yields good clearances for the winter months and debris on the road.
However, on the Avants, it's a real pita to adjust the rear since the control arm where the perch rests is cup-shaped casted and you can't get a coilover wrench on the perch. Basically, you have to take the perches off the car, adjust them, then put them back on to see if you got the desired ride height. It took about 13 hours (2.5 hours for the front, rest on the rear) to get the car adjusted (no kidding). So what I may have saved in $$ by going with the street coilovers was lost in the labor to adjust the suspesion. As a result, I don't plan on ever trying to adjust the rear again.
It rides like the stock suspension and has body roll like the stock suspenion (as you would expect, I guess). Don't expect to Auto-X or do HPDE's with this setup; it just ain't up for the task. It's strictly a good street system, as the name indicates.
I'm happy with the setup, but would warn anyone with an Avant about the rear adjustment.<ul><li><a href="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/25784/img_0123small.1.jpg">http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/25784/img_0123small.1.jpg</a</li></ul>

setup is great in terms of looks, comfort and cornering stability (especially paired w/ rs4 rear sway). not for the autox scene for sure.
agree completely on getting the setup right:
i installed my streetsports to STaSIS spec and it came out way low.
tried to adjust the rears with car on jackstands. no dice. you really need a lift.
my car goes to the local dub/audi tuners next week for proper height adjustment.

to adjust the ride height on the rear - simply remove 2 bolts from one side of the rear subframe, lower the subframe, the spring will be loose, adjust height, replace bolts and move to the other side.
Should take about 30 mins per side.<ul><li><a href="http://www.stasisengineering.com/admin/PDfFile/Suspension%20B7%20SL%20Install.pdf">start at page 9 for rear spring adjustment</a></li></ul>
