Default Just a word of advice to those of you without snow tires in CT/NY/NJ

I decided to take advantage of the new snowfall by finding a parking lot to do doughnuts. One of the lots I tried was an unpaved lot for a nearby park that was unplowed so it had over 20in of snow on it. Since my B7 is my first Audi, and first car for that matter, I figured why not see if quattro and the all season Pirelli tires could handle twenty inches of snow. I made it about ten feet into the lot and then I was stuck. I eventually dug a path with my feet and got the car out. I still have confidence in the quattro and the all season tires, but now I know that any snowfall over a foot on an unpaved road is a little too much for the car to handle. After all, as much as it wants to, it does not perform as well in deep snow as an SUV due to lack of weight. Just out of curiousity, do you think with snow tires and a paved lot I would have been able to make it through 20+ inches of snow?

Default with out a doubt

I went out on my road with about 22-26" of snow on it and did fine with dunlop M3's winters. Apartently my town doesnt see my long *** road as important to plow it wasnt till about 4 pm till they got to my road. I also made it up and down my driveway which is steep too. plus on top of all the snow my car is pritty low.

I shovled afterward so that I could take some pictures.

Default Lot of fun isn't it

I used to live in CT and my B5 used to make it through some absurdly deep snow on AS tires. Took some speed to do get through some unplowed areas, though. I Remember getting thru a street that stopped a grand cherokee. Problem is your car is too low and the whole under carriage is getting jammed up.

The stock Pirelli tires are great if you have enough speed, but 20 inches is a little much I think. I made it through fine but I have Grasspic Ds-2 tires on, didnt bother shoveling, just turned the car on and drove through at least a foot of snow. problem i find sometimes is stopping and watching out for everyone else who doesnt have quattro.

Default winters will help a lot. Trust me, i got summers on right now and never changed over ...

since we have had a mild winter until sunday. I went out for some fun, and although I was ok on the paved roads, i could not make it back up any hills. I had to navigate around and back to my house. With winters on, this would have been no problem. However, even with winters, you need to be careful as our cars are still very low to the ground. I think the only thing that would benefit our cars more would be to have a limited slip installed on the rear as well. Possibly even the front. But then again, our cars are not meant to off road with either. But if you feel the need to challenge the quattro as I do often, keep a shovel, some rubber floor mats to stick under your tires, and make sure you have you have the front tow hook if you really get stuck and need a tow.

Default I know this thread is about tires, but...

I lve in Upstate NY and I've discovered something about the B7 in deep snow.

I've found that the new grill acts like a giant scoop and tends to collect alot of snow, that doesn't drain away on it's own.

It tends to "pool" all along the interior lower lip of the grill and radiator and freeze into a solid rock of ice.

I have to park my car outside and it faces into the wind. One morning, following 3 days of heavy blowing snow, I went out to clean my car off. I did what I always do, by brushing all the snow off (including the grill)

When I started my car, it wouldn't idle.

My first thought was "Oh great I've now got the B7 cold start problem!!"

But that wasn't it.

I started investigating and discovered a giant mass of crusted and frozen snow clogging my radiator and (more importantly)the right side of the lower area adjacent to the air intake.

It had obviously been building up there for a while.

Once I cleared as much of that as I could eveything was fine.

If you're going to be driving through deep snow, you might want to keep an eye on that.

About the tires: I have Conti A/S. I SURVIVE with them. Everybody SHOULD have snow tires in snow

"I would have been able to make it through 20+ inches of snow?"

Live in Northern Ontario, 20+ inchs of snow no problem

However you want to avoid this, the front of your car is not designed to be a snow plow.

Before driveway is plowed, I have to shovel front where street plow went by, so not to damage the car. The driveway itself is not issue if you go slow.
