Default lots of ictures of my Passport 8500 X-50 hardwire as promised

Thanks to Phill (pmark837) who helpeded out a lot by loaning his wiring experience and driveway I finally got the radar detector hardwired.

Setup: Hardwired X50 Passport with mute button on the dash and an on/off switch by the map storage area under the steering column.

We picked the best possible weather...the day after 24 inches of snow fell on NYC.

Here's a picture of Phill standing next to the car...

Props to the Quattro. Phill told me an X5 got stuck in his driveway the day before. I slowly made it in towards the end without porblems. SNOW PLOW!

MUTE BUTTON (we used a monentary button from Radio Shack)I gotta say it's SO much more comfortable than reaching up for the detector.

Default nice job. Can you provide a materials list?

What comes from Passport and what was custom?

Default the only thing from passport was the radar detector...

they give you a cool cord with a mute button but I ditched that thing because it was annoying and I wanted a cleaner look

Materials:
-regular phone cable (the jacks plugs right into the detector)
-On off switch
-Momentary switch (the mute button)
and of course the miscelaneous bits for proper wiring (like those yellow female/male connectors) available at any hardware store.

Default cool...one more question

Do you have a pin diagram for the phone cable, i.e. which wire does the +/- power go to etc...

Thanks

Default I dont...but I think we figured that out when we took the Passport smart cord apart...

then we saw what was the power/ground etc...for technical question ask Phill...he was the wiring guru.

Default are detectors illegal in your area ?

if not... i say you should move it to just below the mirror... better reach and the detector is perfectly long to the point where its sitting at a nice distance under the mirror

and in turn i didn't hardwire a mute switch because the detector is so accessible

Default they are legal in NY..and I wanted to have it up as high as possible..

because it give you great range. I see where you placed yours but that makes it lower and farther away from me. That would be in my line of sight as well and be distracting to me Instead of reaching up and pressing that mute button (thats hard to press by the way and tends to dislodge the detector of it's suction cups after 20-30 times) I just move my hand off the shifter about 6-7 inches and press my mute button.

Default

doesn't placing it that high slightly reduce your rear detection ?
