Most (95%+) Avants are Tiptronic - I had to order my manual. So make sure you're ok with the Tiptronic.
At 30K miles on a mildly modded car with three track weekends (a fourth next week, yeah!), I have NOTHING bad to report. OK,the Avant wagon styling gathers road dirt on the tail more than a sedan, and therefore needs to be washed more often. But that's it.

Your dealer will matter too...
I've had two A4s in a row, and I like the car a lot. I've had a couple of small issues, but they weren't inconvenient because I have a very good dealer 2 miles from home. I guess I'm saying that the dealer matters, and I've never thought that before. Maybe I'm just getting spoiled.

This is my second A4 (had a B5 sedan before this) and I love everything about my Avant. As long as you keep up on the routine maintenance you shouldn't have any problems. You'll be under factory warranty anyways if you get an '06. An Avant has a ton of room for whatever you need (and looks f*ing awesome). I say go for it. Avants FTW!
