12-14mpg??
That's not much better than what I get on the TRACK! vs. 25-30 on the street, though admittedly with a lot of local interstate. You must be consistently shifting at, what, 4,000+?
On a more serious note, agree that we online readers aren't typical, with more mods, more manuals transmissions, and MORE FUN with our Audi's.

Avant handles better / my opinion...
We have 2 '06 A4 S-Lines... both with manual trans...
One is a sedan, one is an Avant...
I cant tell you specifically why, but I prefer to drive the Avant, hands down. It handles better, (some say the added weight in the back balances things out) and just feels more confident in nearly every way.
The back end of the sedan tends to hop a bit, where the Avant will plant itself firmly in a sharp curve on an on/exit ramp... seriously, the avant reminds me in some ways of my old '01 TT cabrio...
taking nothing away from the sedan, which I end up driving more because it has bluetooth and navigation - (wife spends more time in the avant, with the kid); but I do enjoy the avant driving experience more..
We also get more comments in the avant, I suppose because it is more rare a car, ours is a Black, Black S-Line, MT and people, (including some serious car heads) are always asking me about it, where as the sedan sort of blends into the crowd.
