Default Need new brake pads

A few days ago the light for worn brake pads came on. I know that brake pads are not covered under warranty so I am wondering what my options are. Can I buy my own brake pads and have the dealer install them? Will they charge for labor? Will they charge for labor even if I pay for the Audi brake pads and/or get it done at my next service appointment? Am I better off taking my car somewhere besides the dealer? Thanks!

Default Pick up some aftermarket or OEM pads then find a good independent shop in your area.

While the dealers are usually fairly good at service they are typically more expensive than typical independents. Check out the regional forums and get some references for shops in your area.

The dealer will install pads that you supply, however they'll usually charge a slightly higher hourly rate than a good independent. For the fronts you could be looking at about 150 dollars labor and the rear about 250. My advice would be to buy some aftermarket pads (Mintex, Hawk etc, etc) and find a decent independent shop to do it for you. Or you could do it yourself...the fronts are pretty straightforward but if the rears are anything like the B5 then you need a special tool to rotate the spindle...if I remember correctly..

Default IMO

I would use stock pads especially if you ran through the stock ones this fast. I would not go by the light but have someone check it out. My breaks squeak and I thought mine where low but apparently I got some audi "performance pads". I any case if you go with high performance pads you will go through them faster, I have had hawk, axis, and some other brands and they wear just as quickly. Go OEM or another OEM brand, otherwise 30k later (not sure what you have) you will be back on again

Default What year is your car?

Depending on the MY and delivery date, they will replace under warranty/maintenance
