Noise when starting engine

A few times I have gotten a funny noise after the car sits in the heated garage of my apartment bulding for a couple of days. I turn the key, it always starts right away, and just as the starter disengages there is a sharp sound like a mini-backfire or something slapping the cement floor. It goes away immediately and there are no smells, or indications that something has happened - no vibration, and no affect on the engine's running or power. The sound is only like a backfire in the kind of sound, much much lower volume and no percussion or anything. Weird. At first I thought it was a coincidence that some elevator or heating system component in the garage made a noise just as I turned the key, but it has happened three times, and I never hear that sound if I am in the garage for any reason, except as I turn the key. Ideas?

I have also noticed some of the clicking sounds behind dash on passenger side after car has been running for 1 or 2 minutes. I figure it's all normal until I see smoke or flames :-)
