Default For those of you with the 'bad torque converter' surging...

I'm curious, did you try changing your automatic transmission fluid first?

Follow my stupid thinking for a bit:
  • The problem really only occurs while the ATF is below optimal temps (for me this issue only happens 6-7 months out of the year, and for about the first 5-10 min of driving)
  • Changing the torque converter means changing the ATF fluid
  • Audi swears it's a lifetime fluid but videos show how gross this stuff gets over time
  • It's a ton of $$$ to change the torque converter, quite a bit less to change the fluid, filter, and gasket (and also something a person can do at home)
  • An old TSB that I found when searching indicated changing the ATF as one of the earlier steps
Anyone had decent luck trying the fluid? Lots of searching, many discussions but they all seem to end with people changing the torque converter. One thread also mentioned changing the cam follower (not sure what that has to do with it, but it did point out yet another scary thing to watch for).
