After speaking with two Tire Rack professionals, I am being told 245/40-18 is the tire to go with (for my new 18" wheels). I have a stock '06 B7 A4 3.2 quattro (auto). From what I understand, Audi used 235/40-18 on the S-line. But the S-line is lowered a bit from the standard suspension. I want a wheel which feels out the fender well nicely, but I don't want something that rubs or looks like Grandma's grocery-getter.
I checked out the B8 Audi and found it uses 245/40-18.
Looking for some help here before I drop at least $600 on tires.
Thanks!

If you don't have the S-line package you can still have the sport suspension. If you don't have either the sport suspension or the S-line package you're better off not getting 18s as your car will look like it has some sort of lift kit.

Yes to the sport suspension (I think). I have the 5 spoke sport wheels (with 235/45-17 wheels), so I am fairly certain I do. I purchased the car used, so I am not certain.
Lets assume I do have sport. What would be the recommendation.

What is the width and offset?
Here is 245/40/18 on 8" s-line wheels ET43

Here is same tire on 8.5" wheel, ET38

As you can see, 245 tire sticks out pretty far on 8" wheel. Keep in mind this particular tire has a rim gaurd and run a little wide. If it's an 8" wheel, I'd go 235 if 8.5" I'd go 245.
Also, if the wheel has an aggressive offset, for example x<ET35 you might rub with 245 under hard cornering. More pics, just click on the sig.

Big thanks for the details pictures!!! However, I am confused on your recommendation. Per your pics, it appears the 245 tire sticks out LESS on the 8" wheel vs the 8.5". Correct?
Here are the wheels I am seriously considering -- the S5 replicas. ET is 45.
Let me know what people think.
Thanks again!<ul><li><a href="http://www.powerwheelspro.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=41&o sCsid=0f0490eb310dd93eaaa0e675d1e6e7c3">http://www.powerwheelspro.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=41&o sCsid=0f0490eb310dd93ea

If your goal is to fill out the fenders you'll need some spacers. An 8" wheel with that offset will fit much like the stock s-line wheels I posted. Also make sure they will clear the brakes before you purchase.

I had your setup 245/40/18s and after 12,000 miles the tramlining was unbearable. Alignment and full suspension inspection revealed no problems. New tires cured it. Went with Yoko S-drives this time.
