Tire Size on 17" rims

My girlfriend just got a 2008 A4 Quattro that has S-line badges, but base wheels.
The 17" wheels have 225/45/17 tires that let the rims stick out beyond the sidewalls by quite a bit. Needless to say, when acquired, all 5 rims were trashed by the prior owner at the drive-thrus.
I know the OEM tire is 235/45/17, but I wonder if that gives enough width to protect from normal curb rubs?
Tire rack guy says 245/45/17 would do the trick. Any inside A4 wisdom on this? Is this an unusual size of wheel?
Thanks. I have a few other new questions on this car, which I'll post separately.

I would just stick with OEM. 245/45 has a bigger rolling diameter than 234/45 (by 9mm).
This is a helpful wheel offset and tire size calculator that I use all the time when shopping for new wheels and I'm trying to figure what spacers or tire size I can get away with.
