It takes around 300 miles for the car to adjust, after that it will tell you all you need to know. Also if it has the prem package it may not have the trip computer, it might just tell you how many miles or km's you have left until empty.

You do not have the trip computer, it is only part of the Technology Package. If you check your wiper stalk, you will notice that their are no buttons on the end or on the bottom. Without these you cannot control the trip computer.
This weekend I am going to install the Trip Computer Wiper Stalk on my car and see if the trip computer is hidden in the monochrome cluster. If not, then it will require upgrading the wiper stalk (about $125 plus installation) and the instrument cluster to the Color DIS cluster (about $900 option with installation).

The Steering Wheel controls show on the trip computer as "No Function" when pressed. My Touareg uses a spin wheel that can be depressed to select for its trip computer, so I'm thinking the A4 may be the same. Please post if you are successful.

The steering wheel controls are only for the phone (left controls) and stereo (right controls), not the trip computer. The only controls for the Trip Computer are they Wiper Stalk controls. Also, you need to use the VAG-COM to reprogram the cluster for trip computer support. We will see how the upgrade goes.
