What does "Service!" mean?

I have an '08 A4 with 30,084 miles on it. I changed the oil, on-schedule, 5,000 miles ago and today I noticed that when I start up the car (or press the "Service" button) instead of telling me how many miles until the next service, it just displays a message that says "Service!". Running the self-diagnostic returns an "OK" message and there are no check engine lights displayed.
I have to say, it feels like one of those service lights that just come on at pre-determined intervals in order to remind you to take care of the scheduled maintenance, but according to the owner's manual the next scheduled maintenance isn't until 35,000 miles. So, is there any way to determine what it's telling me that I need to service, without paying for an hour of shop time just to have them plug in a scanner? Are there things I should be checking on for regular maintenance?
Thanks for any help on this one.

You can re-set it by holding a button while turning the key on. I think it's the 0,0 button. It's in the owner's manual. The service information (what should be done) in on the Audi website and in the owner's manual. The car is on a 10K service interval and the service reminder comes on at 5K intervals on ours. I just re-set it.

If you use the link above to find someone near to your location, you can change the intervalto match the maintenance interval you are following. Could have been modified by the previous owner to be the 5K mile interval as dealer recommendation for that model year is 10K miles.
